Music Monday - East London is a vampire

Bloc Party

I adore Bloc Party. They are one of the bands that cemented my love for Indie. I first came across them when they released their single "So here we are" in 2005. I rushed out to HMV and brought Silent Alarm. I was hooked. I loved the lyrics, the melodies and the whole persona of the band.I still dont think any album has ever topped the debut one. Silent Alarm hardly left my CD player in 2005, I even brought Razorlight tickets because Bloc Party were announced as the support. I was devastated when they pulled out. I didnt end up seeing the band until 2008 when they played at Reading. Ive seen them twice since and Kele on his own once.

I am a music snob, I admit it. I hate it with a passion when my favourite bands get well known. I know its great for the band finally being recognised for all their hard work. But it breaks my heart when Chavs start listening to them, as what has happened with Kings Of Leon. They only become known for their one hit song and people fail to listen to all their pervious material. Anyway that is a rant for another day.

Bloc Party are hugely successful but they are only really well known in their area of music. Ask a random on the street and the chances are they will never have heard of the band. I think this is why my love affair has continued for so long. They continued to make quality music year after year until they took a break. I can honestly say that there is not one song that I dislike on any of their albums.

I leave you with Banquet, an awesome song from Silent Alarm.

  1. Thanks for the comment. It's reassuring to know other people feel the same way. Although journalism for a magazine sounds like something I wish I'd done instead of psychology. Oh well. And I know exactly what you mean about KOL as well... I much preferred them in the early days x

  5. Love Bloc Party, I went to see them in 2007 at Alexandra Palace and it was awesome. And I have to agree on the KoL front, sex on fire was the beginning of the end of my love affair for them :( Sally x

  6. Great blog! I'm a bit of a music snob myself I admit! I hate it when I discover a new singer/band & then they end up really popular.. It can put me off them a bit actually, which is a shame.
Thanks for commenting on my blog. The ring you asked about was bought from River Island just last week, but it was in the sales. So you might grab it if you're lucky & someone else hasn't pinched it already! There was only a couple left when I found it :)
I'm now following you too X

  7. I love Bloc Party, and Kele's solo stuff is really good too! When the band first came out I remember over hearing someone in a pub saying 'yeah, I just don't think black people should be rock stars'. I was so shocked! What a terrible, racist thing to say.

  11. I love Bloc Party. Silent Alarm always feels like the soundtrack to my last year of college/first year of uni. I came across them when I went to see The Killers headline the Rock & Roll Riot Tour years ago and had no clue who they were at the time. It's still the best gig I've ever been to x
