Review: Audrey Hepburn: Portraits of An Icon

A few weeks ago now I was very kindly given complimetary tickets to pop along to the Audrey Hepburn photography exhibition at the National Portrait Gallery. I've always been a massive fan of Audrey, in fact she's my go to when I need some inspiration for a dressing up party. Or in everyday life! To be given a sneak peak into over 70 images - some from her son's private collection - was fascinating. It was so interesting to read all about this wonderful woman's life. She really was such an icon. Sadly I wasn't allowed to take any pictures inside Portraits of An Icon but take it from me, the photos were stunning. I especially loved the collection of her magazine front covers and seeing the actress change over the years. To see where she came from and to what she eventually ended up being was awe-inspiring. I didn't realise she did so much work for charity.

It's running until 18th October 2015. Although tickets are sold out online, there's a limited number of tickets released at the gallery at 10am every morning. It's well worth getting up early for!

Why we need to help the Syrian refugees

Earlier this week I went for a run. Only a two mile run but still a run. As I ran through my local park, under the under paths and stopped to catch my breath, I suddenly thought that I was running for fun. A quite twisted type of fun. But still I was going out for a run because I wanted too. There are women that have to run to avoid being raped. Women who have to run because they need to get their child urgent medical attention. Families who are running to get out of a building before a bomb blows it to pieces. Families who are running to ensure their children stay children away from violence and gun fire. Children who are running to avoid being picked up as child soldiers. They are running because their life depends on it.

The Syrian refugee crisis is something that is causing a lot of strong opinions. In fact, my mum actually banned the subject at a family BBQ because she didn't want a family occasion to be fuelled with lots of shouting. I've seen a lot of posts on Facebook regarding the situation with many people shockingly posting images from the EDL. I've heard lots about how we need to sort out our own country first. Worried about the state of the NHS? Look at who you voted for. The Tory government is all about privatising the NHS. Those bad boys are the ones who are cutting budgets and putting a strain on our healthcare. Annoyed about the lack of houses? Blame Maggie Thatcher for selling off all the council houses. That's why we don't have any as people bettered themselves and invested in property. You go to the north of the country and there are rows and rows of derelict houses begging to have money pumped in to make the liveable. Something the government doesn't seem to be interested in. Scared that they're going to take all our jobs? There's a high unemployment rate in the whole world. Not just the UK. Plus I honestly believe there's enough jobs, just not enough jobs at proud people will do. Worried about the homeless? When was the last time you dug in your pocket and donated money to help then? Or went out onto the streets with hot food to hand out? Think they should stay and fight their own battles? They can't. Just like the Jewish people were powerless to stop Hitler in his tracks.

These people are not immigrants. They are refugees. There's a massive difference. They are not choosing to leave their country in hope for a better life. They are leaving their country because there is a high percentage that they will die if they stay. After the war is over, refugees are required to return to their home country. Would they really be risking their lives if there was a better option on offer? Are you telling me you would stay put? I would crawl to a safe haven if I had too.

I can't help but think if these were white, Christian refugees, the public might be a bit more forthcoming. Not every person from the Middle East is a fully fledged member of ISIS. Just like not every person from Northern Ireland is part of the IRA. Just like not every person from Israel wants to wipe out Palestine. Amongst the refugees there will be ordinary doctors, teachers and engineers desperate to escape a war-torn country.

Young people are impressionable. If we show them hatred, disgust and disrespect, who's to say they won't be swayed by someone else. That someone else could be ISIS. It's incredible the lengths a human being would go to keep their family safe. How they would make a deal with the devil. I know I would. There's only so much anger one person can take before they flip and inflict their rage on that person. That person could be the western society. We could be giving the tools to ISIS to help them with their brainwashing campaign.

The United Kingdom needs to step up and offer these poor souls a place of refuge. Why? Simply because it's the decent thing to do. No one should be forced to live a life in a warzone because of their circumstances. I was lucky to be born into a civilised democratic society. In a country that is the fourth richest in the world. A country where I am free to walk along outside as a woman. A country where I can travel on my own to soak up other cultures. A country where I can become anyone or anything that I want to be. That's all it is, just luck.

In times of need the world needs to stick together and help each other. It's about being a human being. Show some compassion. Put yourself in their shoes. Let's show the world just how great Great Britain is and lead by example.

Ultimo launch their House of Fraser concession

Last week I was invited along to one of my favourite blog events so far by the lingerie brand Ultimo. The brand was celebrating an exciting House of Fraser, Oxford Street concession launch. After being offered a glass of fizz, we were taken through the incredible new AW range. Full of wearable yet subtly sexy designs, it was extremely hard to pick my favourite set. But I finally bit the bullet and opted for the Darcey set -pictured in the last image. We were then enlisted to style up an outfit to show off the underwear to it's finest. I'm not much of a cleavage girl - never been blessed in that department so I zoned in on lacy cover up I spotted. After lots of deliberation, I opted for a crisp white shirt with a few buttons undone with a black striped full midi skirt accessorised with a leopard clutch and shiny red courts. After a few awkward poses in front of a professional photographer, we were treated to our favourite underwear set.

For a blogger, I seriously need to work on my angles. And perhaps lay off the cake. And should have reapplied my lipstick. Thanks for a lovely evening Ultimo!

On September 10th - which is this Thursday - the brand is holding special event at the concession starting at 7pm. X Factor Stylist Grace Woodward and celebrity stylist Frank Stratchan will be on hand to answer any of your burning questions on stage. Guests will be offered a snazzy 20% off all purchases, champagne and a gift with your purchases. Worth rocking up for right?! Anyone is welcome!

OOTD: Ripped jeans

Outfit:
Floral kimono: Oasis
Light wash ripped jeans: F&F (similar)
White cut out floral top: Boohoo*
Pony hair black heeled sandals: New Look (similar)

Another day. Another kimino. These babies are turning out to be my achilles heel. I seem to be buying one every month much to my bank account's dismay. So easy to throw on and still look half decent. They're an absolute godsend in this awful humid weather. I'm constantly hot and cold so these are great to help keep the chill off when the rain starts to appear. I wore this for a lovely day out at the beautiful Blenheim Palace in Oxfordshire. Oh how the other half lives! The grand house was a birthplace of Sir Winston Churchill and is set in stunning grounds. This year marks the 50th anniversary of the ex-Prime Minister's death so there's lots of interesting exhibits to read.

September seems to already be a very busy month. Considering I've been made redundant, I seem to be doing a lot of things! Thank god for some freelancing work. I'm in London a few days this week which is always nice - never tire of the big city! Something about that place always gets me. Lots of cinema trips - see Southpaw immediately guys, it's immense -, boxing matches, Cillian Murphy talks and Butlins fun to be had this month!

How is your September planning out?

4 tips on how to save for a house deposit

It's all fun and games when you're buying china cups and saucers for your future house and picking out the perfect coloured Smeg fridge. But all that's no good if you haven't actually got the two pennies to rub together for a house deposit. As many people my age, I'm currently on the long journey to try and scrap together £30k to buy my own house. But with houses prices constantly on the up, I really haven't got too long. So I've got a few tricks and tips to help make the process a little easier.

Start a money diary
It can be so easy to spend money and before you know, it's the end of the month and you only have £2.31 left in your bank account and nothing to show for. Keep track of everything you spend from that random splurge in Topshop to the cheeky three bottles of diet coke. This will help you re-evaulate your spending habits and work out how much you can comfortably save a month and still have a semi-decent social life.

Set up a direct debit for the day you get paid
If you're anything like me, you live like a King the first week of your pay-packet and then have to survive like a pauper for the remaining three weeks. I set a direct debit to come out of my bank account the day I get paid for my savings account. This way I hardly know it's gone missing as it's like it was never really there.

Get a credit check
Before you get accepted for the elusive mortgage you have to undergo a credit check. You can find out more here. This will help give your credit history a score rating and will help you know exactly what you need to change or carry on doing. Once this is completed, house buying starts to get a lot more serious. Make sure you keep paying off those monthly credit card bills and make late payments a thing of the past. No point saving all that money if the bank is going to reject you anyway. Get your affairs in order!

Learn to make sacrifices
In an ideal world I'd have numerous Mulberry handbags, monthly trips to the Caribbean, a North London townhouse and a wardrobe full of Christian Louboutin shoes. But alas on my wages, it ain't ever going to happen. So you need to decide what you want the most and what you can still afford to do despite putting away a huge chunk of your money. For me it's travel - you can tell by my Pinterest board! I'm not really prepared to compromise on that aspect. So I've cut back on the amount of new clothes I buy so I can put more money towards seeing the world. That way the house deposit fund doesn't have to suffer.

Do you have any words of wisdom to offer?

Review: J-Dog, Shoreditch

When an email popped into my inbox from J-Dog inviting me to lunch, I was intriuged. Based at Pump street market - a cool old petrol station in shoreditch - the Asian-infused hot dog company are offering something unique to the market. In fact, they're the only ones offering Japanese dogs on the market. Pretty cool huh?

First up to try was the Kimchi J-Dog. A premium Japanese Kurobuta pork sausage was piled high with crispy seaweed, thick tangy Teriyaki sauce and spicy Kimchi. Delicious! The flavours went absolutely perfect together. The juicy sausage was the star of the hotdog.

Then we tried the Okonomi J-Dog. Once again I opted for the Kurobuta sausage. There was just something about the intense flavouring and tender meat. So unlike any other pork sausage I'd had before. This time it was topped with dried bonito flakes - fermented tuna -, okonomi sauce and Japanese mayonnaise. The Bonito flakes were definately an acquired taste!

The stall has recently started introducing seafood to the mix too. With a mixture of spring rolls, crispy calamari and juicy tempura prawns. Usually I find fried seafood a little hit and miss. The grease can be overpowering and ruin the fish. But this was amazing. The batter was lovely and thin and made sure the seafood was the star of the show. It sounds simple but it's very hard to master given the amount of terrible versions I've eaten.

The street market is open from 11am-11pm so it's a great place to stop on the way home after the pub to the station. If you like your food with a kick, you can't go wrong with the Kimchi special. You won't regret a visit!

OOTD: Grey Duster Coat

Outfit:
Grey duster coat: Topshop (similar)
Paisley print silky shirt: c/o Boohoo
Ripped skinny jeans: F&F (similar)
Double strap sliders: Birkenstocks

So August huh? The less said about this month the better. This isn't the outfit I'd expected to wear during the 'height' of summer but what can you do? That said I really loved this outfit. It was just so simple yet I still felt well put together. I treated myself to this shirt thanks a gift voucher from the Boohoo press day and it's hardly left my body. I love the silky, fancy material and the fact it's collarless makes it a little different from the sea of shirts in my drawer.

Recipe: Cranberry and White Chocolate Blondies

A little while ago I attended a Whitworths baking class with GBBO finalist Holly Bell. It really was such a lovely afternoon and so much fun rolling my sleeves up and baking some goodies. I really don't bake enough recently and had forgotten how much I loved it. They very kindly sent us some ingredients for some recipes including their famous products. I have to say I was very impressed, I'm not usually much of a dried fruit fan as I find it quite dry. But the fruit was juicy and extremely tasty. You can definitely tell the difference!

First up to try were the Cranberry and White Chocolate Blondies. These wasn't the most photogenic bake I've created but they were one of the tastiest! They are best enjoyed warm from the oven so you can appreciate the gooey white chocolate and juicy cranberries.

As always please do let me know if you attempt these and tweet my your attempts!

A few favourites #5

1. The Hairy Dieters cookbook
I'm trying my hardest to eat healthily or at least 80% of the time. We all need a burger binge once in a lifetime right? So I've been digging around in my extensive cookbook collection and come across an old favourites. I adore The Hairy Bikers - I think I might have nearly all of their books. This one is a little gem. Every recipe I've tried has been amazing and they all feel indulgent despite shaving off a few calories from the original. It's amazing how a few changes can completely reduce the calorie content without having to compromise on taste.

2. Schwarzkopf Got2b Rise 'n' Shine Volume and Shine Hairspray*
I'm always a little heavy handed with hairspray - gotta help it stick right? - so look out for one that has a strong hold but doesn't make my hair feel rock solid. I've found just the right one thanks to Got2b. This beauty helps to stop any stray hairs coming out of place, gives it a much needed shine and boasts it's volume. The lazy girl in me loves a multi-tasker. It's easy to brush out and my hair doesn't feel heavy or sticky.

3. Urbanears Plattan headphones
My headphones suddenly packed up halfway through my commute to the city so I need of some decent quality ones sharpish. I'd spotted these in various colours on the tube so hunted around until I realised what they were. Urbanears is a Scandinavian brands and are famous for their rainbow colours. They're comfortable to wear, easy to adjust and have brilliant sound quality.

4. Next postcard clutch bag
My darling mother treated me to this clutch in the Next sale just before I went to Barcelona. I have such a soft spot for a novelty clutch and this one ticks all the boxes. Such a conversation starter!

5. Models Own Chrome effect nail polishes*
Since I've been trying really hard to stop biting my nails, I've been smothering them in nail polish a few times a week. I've found if they look pretty, I tend to leave them alone. I picked up these polishes a few months ago from my old job and they look great on. So shiny! The gold and silver are already earmarked for the festive season.

6. Gallo Family Vineyards Spritz Raspberry and Lime & Pineapple and Passionfruit*
I do love a good glass of wine as anyone who knows me will confirm but sometimes it's nice to have something a little lighter and more refreshing. That's where these tasty concoctions came in. TV presenter Laura Whitemore is the face of the brand so you know you're going to be in good hands when you crack open a bottle. All the cool kids are drinking them!

Recipe: Pulled Pork Burrito Bowl

I was contacted by ASDA and asked to make up my own recipe to take part in the Pork Belly challenge. I eagerly accepted and decided to make my own version of a burrito bowl. This is a dish which I have when I'm feeling on a bit of a health kick. It feels indulgent but is full of veggies. It's really up to you what you pop in, the world is your oyster! The pork belly tasted delicious in it!

Serves 2
Takes around 40 minutes
Burrito:
ASDA Butcher's Selection Sweet BBQ Crispy Pork Belly
1 pack of microwavable brown rice
1 can of kidney beans
1 small can of sweetcorn
4 tablespoons of 0% fat Greek yogurt
1 avocado
2 teaspoons of paprika

Salsa:
Half a lime
15 cherry tomatoes, diced
A small handful of fresh coriander
1 small green chilli

1. Preheat the oven to 200 degrees (slightly lower if you have a non-fan assisted oven).

2. Chop the coriander and chilli before mixing together with the diced tomatoes and lime juice to make the salsa.

3. Pop the pork belly in the oven for around 25-30 minutes. Keep an eye on it as it does cook fast! It says 45 minutes on the packet but this was too long for my oven.

3. Once the pork belly has been in the oven for 25 minutes, take it out and sprinkle the sachet of toffee crumble on top. Cook for a further 2 minutes before taking it out of the oven. Let it rest for around 3-4 minutes before shredding.

4. Drain the kidney beans and pop in a saucepan on a medium heat with the paprika. After 2/3 minutes add the sweetcorn and carry on stirring for 3 more minutes. Peal and chop the avocado.

5. Pop the rice in the microwave for the allocated time.

6. Serve between two bowls before tucking in.

I'd love to know if you rustle this up. Just tweet me and let me know!

OOTD: What I Wore In Barcelona

I had high hopes that I was going to going to do fancy photoshoots in the pretty streets of Barcelona. But that never happened. I was a sweaty mess most of the time and craved a air conditioned room. No one needs to see those type of photoshoots. But I did manage to snap a few on my phone so thought I'd round them all together.

Ginger & Co beauty range

Bathing Beauty Moisturising Bubble Bath & Wash - £3.99*
There's nothing quite like a relaxing, hot bubble bath after a stressful day to help restore calm.  Luckily only a few squeezes of this bubble bath immediately produces an impressive array of bubbles. Perfect to sink in to and read a book! The citrus of the lemon balm immediately comes out and wafts around the room as the bubbles start to form. Thanks to it's moisturising qualities my skin came out feeling supple and smooth. Nothing worth than resembling a lizard with scaly skin if you forget to apply moisturiser!

Soft on You Daily Body Lotion - £3.99*
Rose is my favourite smell when it comes to beauty products so as soon as I started to use this I was smitten. It's a very light weight moisturiser making it perfect for morning use. It doesn't take very long to sink in and a little goes a long way. I find it worked great on the stubborn areas of my knees and elbows. Dry skin be gone!

Double Up Creamy Bodywash with Added Moisturisers - £3.49*
The ginger hit me as soon as I started to lather up the body wash. Perfect to help wake you up in the morning! It really does what it says on the tin and keeps my skin in tip top shape. It's great if you're in a rush and haven't got time to spend moisturising when you're out of the shower. Two in one products always get a thumbs up from me!

Heavenly Hands Moisturising Hand wash - £3.99*
Hands can take a battering in day to day life so a good hand wash is an essential. Endless washing can leave your hands capped and sore. A great blend of ginger root, beauplex and Juniper Berry means it smells heavenly. Perfect to keep your mitts in shape.

Soft On You Comforting Body Butter - £3.99*
If I had to choose, I would opt for a body butter over body lotion any day. The thick cream just feels more luxurious. A little certainly goes a long way with this body butter - it'll last you for ages. I do love products that are good value for money! My skin immediately felt so much more smoother and supple. It was very quick to sink in so I had no problem slipping in a pair of jeans after. Always a winner when you're in a rush!

Have you ever tried the Ginger & Co range? The whole range is now available at The Co-Operative.
