Review: Rustiko, Soho, Central London


Last week I ventured to Old Compton Street to sample the Italian restaurant Rustiko. Rustiko was something I'd often glanced at on a wander through Soho so I was excited to try what they had to offer. Soho has an unbelievable amount of choice and it can sometimes be overwhelming trying to decide which restaurant to pick. Rustiko had a lot of different places to contend with but could it live up to the expectations?





To start, we ordered bolognese arancini balls, crispy white bait with a creamy garlic mayonnaise and chicken croquettes stuffed with oozing mozzarella, fresh parsley and a hint of parmesan.

The arancini were perfectly cooked. Crispy on the outside and the rice inside was given such a delicious flavour thanks to the bolognese sauce - very addictive! The garlic 'green' mayo was amazing and provided the perfect accompaniment to the battered whitebait. Finally the creamy round croquettes melted in you mouth with every bite with the double cheese getting a huge thumbs up from me.




We decided to opt for a pizza and pasta dish for our mains and shared half each. Because sharing is caring guys!

Cooked el-dente, the rigatoni amatriciana was smothered in a smooth tomato sauce with chunks of smoked pancetta, a scattering of parsley and a topping of shaved parmesan. Knowing that the pasta dish was probably going to be quite rich, we opted for something a little lighter for the pizza. And boy was this the right decision to make. A crispy base filled to the brim with lashing of hummus, towering grilled vegetables, a sprinkling of parmesan and a drizzle of balsamic vinegar. I'd never had a non-tomato based pizza before so was a bit unsure if it would be up to my standards. But it was a revelation. The hummus and balsamic vinegar gave it such an intense flavour and gave it almost a Middle Eastern flatbread feel.

A trio of ice cream and sorbet provided the perfect end to a great meal. I just about managed to squeeze it in! Although I was waddling out of the door...

I was also given a tour downstairs of their new cool underground bar called The Shed. Sadly all my pictures I took were a bit rubbish thanks to the dark lighting so you'll have to take my word for it that it's well wroth a visit. Offering a DJ, killer cocktail list and comfy chairs, it looks like a great place to hang out with friends and put the world to rights.

An Italian feast with Napolina


Napolina got in touch to see if I wanted a break from all the festive food and have a little Italian feast before Christmas. How could I say no to an offer like that?

The kind folks sent me over an extra virgin olive oil, balsamic vinegar, passata, pesto and pasta to rustle up a Sunday night dinner. I've been a fan of Napolina for a while so was looking forward to cooking up a storm.



I opted for some trusty homemade pizzas with a cheeky stuffed crustready made base. Go big or go home I say. It was Sunday ok? And I was nursing an hangover. Pesto makes the world go round so I opted for sweet peppers, mushrooms and onions with a drizzle of the good stuff. Perfection! For the meat eater, chorizo, mozzarella pearls and peppers always go down well.

What are your favourite pizza toppings? Always after some inspiration!

Paired with some crusty bread with balsamic vinegar and oil alongside a basic dish of pesto pasta and sundried tomatoes, it was a feast set for a King. Thanks for such a cosy night in Napolina!

Introducing the new ASDA Italian ready meal range


Ready meals have such a bad reputation. They're billed as tasteless, unhealthy and quite frankly, a little bit rubbish. However, ASDA were having none of this and took themselves to explore the many regions of Italy to ensure an authentic taste. Pretty cool eh? Each one features truly local ingredients and they've really work hard to ensure they're packed full of intense and gorgeous flavour.



I luckily got to try four different dishes - it's a hard job but someone had to do it. I was very impressed with the quality and the rich flavour of each meal.They didn't have any of the blandness you come to expect from a ready meal. I'm usually a bit of a snob but I had to eat my words - and pasta! - when it came to these dishes. My personal favourite were the chunky succulent pork meatballs in a fresh tomato sauce served with thick bucatini pasta. ASDA have tried really hard to use a variety of pastas to help their customers experiment. Non-pasta dishes have also been introduced such as gnocchi and potatoes. 

Not content with bringing 18 brand new ready meals to the shelves, they've introduced a new chilled fresh-baked breads to the equation. Keep an eye out for the incredible sweet caramelised onion bread topped with gooey cheese. Perfection!



The ready meal range starts at just £2.18 making them great if you're on a tight budget one week yet don't want to compromise on taste. They're three for £6 at the minute too - catch them while you can!

Dinner with Strada

Last week I was kindly invited out for a blogger dinner with the Italian restaurant Strada. We were treated like Queens! Alongside free-flowing prosecco and white wine, we were given canapรฉs and three courses in front of one of the city's most famous landmarks - London Bridge. It was such a wonderful evening and so lovely to get to know like-minded bloggers who are obsessed with food!


I have to be honest and admit that I tend to stay away from most chain restaurants as I think the food scene in London is of such a high quality, it seems a shame to go somewhere with mass produced food. But I will eat my hat! Strada has bucked the trend and is producing fresh, tasty food for its customers.


We were given plump green nocellara olives to start. Next up was a fresh caprese salad consisting of creamy buffalo mozzarella, ripe tomatoes, basil and a generous drizzle of olive oil. The perfect dish to help soak up the summer! Then I tried Burrata for the first time draped on top of proscuitto ham with crunchy toast - my favourite of the tasters. Creamy risotto and tender rare steak followed. Finally we were presented with a crispy veal covered in crunchy breadcrumbs. My belly was already feeling full and then we were told we would be treated to a three course meal of our choice. Wow!






For my starter I couldn't help but opt for the Spring Veggie Bruschetta on such a warm evening. Peas, spring onions and soya beans were mixed with creamy ricotta, mint and a squeeze of bitter lemon. It was the perfect portion size and the soft cheese went brilliantly with the crunchy slice of bread. For my main I chose the Cavatappi Genovese. El dente corkscrew pasta was smothered in basil nuts, topped with crunchy pine nuts alongside a scattering of soft new potatoes and fresh green beans. Delicious! I never wanted the bowl of pasta to run out! Finally for my dessert I wanted something light to counteract such a huge meal! The lemon sorbet was a no brainer. It was incredibly refreshing - just the ticket to end such a fantastic meal.




I joined the head chef of the restaurant to attempt to spin my own pizza base. He certainly made it look a lot easier than it was. Simply covered in a tart tomato sauce and nutty pesto, the pizza was divine. It tasted all the better knowing that I spun it myself. Not bad for my first attempt - but lets look over the fact it looks slightly oval!





I finally got the train home with a full belly, feeling a little merry and armed with an amazing personalised Strada apron. It was a lovely way to see out a Thursday - thanks for the invite guys! Big thanks to Angela and Felicia for catching me in action too!
