How to style a tiered midi skirt

I wore this over the weekend for a little mother/daughter date to London. We had such a lovely day catching An American in Paris in the West End (highly recommend it!), buying ridiculous yet fully essential things for my garden to make it look pretty for an upcoming BBQ and stuffing our faces in Bills with ribs and chicken burgers. It turned out to be such a beautiful day and it finally felt like spring. Looking out the window I had high hopes for the weather so I decided to wear my favourite skirt again. It makes me feel like the red lady dress emoji which is never a bad thing right?

This weekend looks to be just as fun as I'm on my way to the French Riviera for a weekend with my favourite internet friends. We've got the perfect guide in the form of Elodie showing us all around her hometown. I can't wait for a weekend of good food, great company and warm sunshine. It's been a long four months since I've been on a plane so I'm so excited to be exploring another part of the world.

How to wear a pleated midi skirt

Outfit:
Black jersey roll neck: Topshop (similar)
Pink pleated midi skirt: H&M (similar)
Tailored grey coat: New Look (similar)
Black mid heel courts: Primark (similar)

I'm so pleased to be dipping into my spring/summer wardrobe again! I feel like I dress so much better in the warmer weather. All midi skirts and dresses galore. It's so much easier to throw something on and look presentable. I love jeans but I struggle to pull of the effortless LA chic and look more like lazy Essex girl who woke up too later and had to get ready in a rush. This hot pink pleated midi skirt was a bargain many moons ago from H&M for about £8, it comes out year after year and never gets old! It reminds me that I need to add a few more pleated skirts to my wardrobe... Paired with a simple roll neck tee and a tailored coat, the whole outfit looks smart and presentable when you haven't really made that much effort at all.

I'm on countdown to the Easter weekend - gotta love those four day weeks. I'm going out for a few drinks for  tonight for Kim's birthday and have a date with Gemma to see Don Juan in Soho tomorrow. The rest of the weekend will be spent watching my boyfriend showing off his handiwork in the house and getting in his way, providing bacon rolls from Dorringtons. Renovating a house isn't my strong point - I'm much better when there's plaster on the walls as seeing just a shell sends my blood pressure through the roof...

OOTD: Red Gingham Midi Skirt

Outfit:
Light wash denim jacket: Primark (similar)
White tee: Primark (similar)
Red gingham midi skirt: ASOS (similar)
Black pony haired sandals: New Look (similar)

Desperately trying to hold onto my bare legs and sandals, I wore this outfit last week on a beautifully warm day in the city. I felt very summery in this outfit prancing around London pretending to be important. Although I did treat myself to my new winter ankle boots that day so maybe I'm not too sad about the chillier climates coming as I thought. I always try to hold onto bare legs until at least the end of September. We spend most of our lives in England smothered in tights, boots and scarves so I like to milk it when I can. Tell me I'm not the only one trying to kid themselves that it's Autumn?!

Thanks to the beautiful Sarah for snapping these on her lunch break. Such a babe!

OOTD: Black midi skirt

Black and silver netted midi skirt: c/o Chi Chi London thanks to Etail PR
Silver t-bar heels: Primark (similar)

I feel like this outfit is around three months too late. It feels and looks a bit too Christmassy for March. But I'm a rebel so I'm going to run with it anyway! The skirt is too pretty to be tucked away in the wardrobe. I'm kinda digging the wonky lop-sided-ness of these pictures - makes me feel a little bit Alice In Wonderland. Never a bad thing right?

On Thursday I'm off to Chicago and the surrounding areas for eight days on a press trip. Excited doesn't even cover it! I only went to America for the first time last year and have been desperate to venture back ever since. I'm looking forward to seeing another side of the States. I've got a feeling that it's going to be a lot different to NYC. I've got a few posts scheduled to help keep you entertained when I'm away. Keep an eye out!

How to style a midi skirt

Even if you've only read my blog for a few weeks, you'll know that I have an obsession with midi lengths and in particular midi skirts. I often get told that people love them but could never pull them off themselves. Rubbish! Midi skirts are so amazing because they suit everyone - you just need to find the right one. I've got a few pearls of wisdom to pass on.

1. Wear heels or pointed flats
Midi skirts have the nasty habit of looking a bit frumpy. Now I'd love to pull off the off duty look with converse and a midi - it's a fine line - but I can't most of the time. Fair play to those who do! But I feel that a little bit of a heel lifts the skirt from frump to chic. In the winter I love to wear mine with chunky heeled boots. If you can't stomach wearing heels all day then a pair of pointed flats will be perfect. They just make it look a little more polished.

2. Find a length that works for you
There are many types of skirts that are classed as midis on sale. For some companies they come just above the knee and for others they fall down to your calf. I remember feeling very exposed when I popped the above midi on - you could see my knees! The shorter ones are perfect for those who might be a bit on the small side - they won't swamp your frame. Whereas the longer lengths are great for tall ladies.

3. Wear a fitted top
I always wear a fitted top and always tuck it in. I've never been one of these cool cats who can wear a jumper over the top. It's just too much material and does me no favours. Show off your waist if it's your smallest part and you'll create that gorgeous 1950 silhouette.

4. Wear a waist length jacket
Again I find a waist length jacket like a leather biker or a denim jacket works best. It stops at your waist and shows off the skirt in it's full entirety. I find it can cut off your body if it's too much longer. In the winter I try to wear a full length coat - maybe with just the bottom of the skirt peeking out if I'm feeling cheeky. But I never wear a coat that stops halfway down the skirt as I find it not to be very flattering.

Do you have any style tips for midis?

Psssst I find ASOS is the best place to pick up some gorgeous midi skirts - here are a few of my favourites. It's not sponsored, they just take too much of my money.

Lets run away, get out of here. I got no money and I don't care.

It's been a while since I've embraced the crop top but I found this during a tidy up and was a little ashamed to see it still had the tags on it. Crop tops and full midi skirts are one of my favourite combinations to wear. It still looks classy but a little bit cheeky too. I'm never one to show a lot of flesh but this is a trend I can get on board with. I still feel a little covered up which is a plus for a 25-year-old granny. I can't be the only one who goes on a night out and wants to give the young girls my coat to cover their skimpy outfits? They look so cold!
